Official Victims
There are 10 official victims linked to the Long Island Serial Killer case.
Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, of Norwich, Connecticut, was last seen on July 9, 2007 after traveling to New York City. She occasionally worked as a Craigslist escort to pay the bills. Her remains were recovered on Gilgo Beach in December 2010.
Jessica Taylor, 20, of Washington, DC, went missing in New York City in July 2003. Her partial remains were first recovered on July 26, 2003 in Manorville, New York, and later on Gilgo Beach in April 2011.
On June 28, 1997, the dismembered torso of Jane Doe No. 3, a young African-American female, was found in Lakeview, New York. Investigators reported the victim had a tattoo of a peach on her left breast. In April 2011, investigators discovered more of her remains inside a plastic bag near Jones Beach State Park, nicknamed "Jane Doe No. 3". DNA analysis later identified this victim as the mother of "Baby Doe."
Megan Waterman, 22, of South Portland, Maine, went missing on June 6, 2010, after placing advertisements on Craigslist as an escort. Her remains were recovered on Gilgo Beach in December 2010.
Valerie Mack, 24, of Port Republic, NJ, was last seen in the spring of 2000. Once known only as “Jane Doe No. 6,” her partial remains were first discovered in Manorville, NY, in November 2000, and later on Gilgo Beach in April 2011. She was identified using genetic genealogy in May 2020.
The skeletal remains of “Baby Doe,” a female toddler between the ages of 16 and 24 months, was discovered on Gilgo Beach in April 2011. Her body was wrapped in a blanket and showed no visible signs of trauma. DNA tests revealed that the child's mother was "Jane Doe No. 3" or “Peaches,” whose body was recovered 10 miles east, near Jones Beach State Park. The toddler was reported to be a person of color and was wearing gold earrings and a gold necklace.
Melissa Barthélemy, 24, of Buffalo, New York, went missing on July 10, 2009. She had been living in the Bronx and working as an escort through Craigslist. Her remains were recovered on Gilgo Beach in December 2010.
The remains of Jane Doe No. 7, as called “Fire Island Jane Doe,” were recovered near Tobay Beach in April 2011. These remains were linked by DNA testing to a set of remains found on Fire Island in April 1996. The victim had a surgical scar on her left leg.
Amber Lynn Costello, 27, of North Babylon, New York, went missing on September 2, 2010. She had been working as an escort through Craigslist. Her remains were recovered on Gilgo Beach in December 2010.
John Doe was discovered on Gilgo Beach in April 2011. He was an Asian male who died from blunt-force trauma to the face. According to investigators, he likely worked as an escort and was found wearing women’s clothing. He was between 17 and 23 years of age, 5' 6" in height, and missing four teeth; he had been dead for between five and ten years.
Possible Connected Victims
Shannan Marie Gilbert, 23, was a Craigslist escort who disappeared from a client’s residence in Oak Beach, NY, on May 1, 2010. Her remains were discovered off Ocean Parkway in December 2010. Many credit the search for Shannan with leading to the discovery of the Gilgo Four, John Doe, Baby Doe, and the partial remains of Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, and Jane Doe No. 3,
Natasha Jugo, 31, was last seen on March 16, 2013, leaving her home in Queens Village, NY. The next day, Jugo’s vehicle was found abandoned along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach, along with her wallet, ID, and some clothing. Her body was discovered washed ashore on Gilgo Beach on June 24, 2013.
On March 3, 2007 a dismembered torso of a hispanic or light-skinned African American woman was found inside a suitcase in Westchester County, New York. She had a tattoo of two red cherries on a green stem located on her right breast. "Cherries" (as she is referred to by law enforcement) was also decapitated and dismembered, although her original cause of death was a stab wound to the torso.
On June 27, 2008, the remains of 39-year-old Tanya Rush, a Brooklyn mother of three who worked as an escort, was discovered dismembered inside a suitcase on the shoulder of an entrance ramp on the Southern State Parkway.
